You can live the good life!

Beat rising food prices by growing your own crops in a Polytunnel.Fruit basket in a Polytunnel

When was the last time you stood at the supermarket checkout and thought “Gosh, is that all I’ve spent?” The rising cost of food is hitting families hard – and economists have warned that food price inflation could hit 9% by Christmas.

The good news is that there’s an easy way to break the vicious circle of rising prices and falling income by growing your own food! To prove a point, we took a peek into the supermarket trolley of an average family to probe the cost of fruit and veg on a typical weekly shop.

Veg           Cost
Tomatoes £1.50
2 x bags Potatoes £4.00
Strawberries £2.50
Sweet peppers £1.29
Beans £1.50
Carrots £1.00
Bagged Salad £1.50
Seasonal Veg £2.00
Onions          72p for 3
Cucumber £0.70
Lettuce £0.70
Chives £1.49
Basil £1.19
Total £20.09

Thats over £20 per week – or £1,000 a year!

Grow your own Veg in a Polytunnel

A Polytunnel can help any household save money by creating a perfect micro climate for growing food. Crops experience an Indian Summer every year, so gardeners will be harvesting delicious home grown crops long into the chilly autumn months. Of course, you won’t clock up nectar points by growing your own, but the rewards from your health and wealth are infinitley sweeter.

This is my first year with a Polytunnel and I have to say, it is the best investment I have ever made. Not only have I grown, pickled, frozen, eaten and enjoyed an abundance of fruit and vegetables – I have found our Polytunnel has brought hours of family quality time too..and this is PRICELESS :-)
